For those of you not from Central Ohio, and for those of you in Central Ohio that have been oblivious to nearly every storefront, poster, and local magazine/newspaper in the city, 2012 is Columbus’ 200th year. Yahoo! Tons of celebrations and events are happening all year to commemorate the occasion from giant birthday parties to bike tours to public art exhibits.

Coming up September 29-October 7 is a week dedicated to showcasing the awesome design scene Columbus has to offer. I have been working with a core group of about 10 designers as well as a number of fabulous collaborators to help make this event come to life. Links to official articles and websites describing the events and sponsors/affiliates will be at the end of the post, but first I want to highlight a couple of the great events we’ve been working on.

Film Screenings

film screening-columbus design week

On September 30th we’re going to screen a selection of film shorts based on Columbus’ built environment. We’re teaming up with the Columbus Moving Image Art Review, who has given us invaluable advice and helped guide us through hosting an event like this, to curate a 1+ hour film all about Columbus. Have a short film about Columbus? Inspired to make one? There is still time to submit a film! Check out the submissions page for more information (and to admire the lovely poster made by yours truly).

Not a filmmaker, but still intrigued? Be sure to make your way to the matinee screening on September 30 at Gateway Film Center. We’ll have a small reception afterward so you’ll be able to meet the talented filmmakers who contributed to the project.

Ideabook Exhibition

Another event we’re hosting is the Columbus Ideabook exhibition. The premise is simple: get an Ideabook and fill it with your ideas, thoughts, inspirations, and aspirations for the city. We want your vision for Columbus and we want the world to see it! We’ve given nearly 500 of these little orange books to civic leaders, architects, designers, entrepreneurs, community organizers, chefs, foodies, and anyone who takes pride and cares about this city. Once we get them back, they will all be on display for the city to see at an exhibition opening on September 29th. These books will be both a testimony of Columbus in 2012 as well as a vision for an even better Columbus in the future.

If you’re interested in participating in this awesome project, there are still a few books left! Fill out the contact form on the website to get your name on one of these gems!

I’ve just scratched the surface on all of the events that are planned for the week. There’s going to be design awards, lectures, tours, and more. Our events calendar will give you more detailed descriptions of everything happening during the week.
